  • The Trainer I duties are to prepare curricula, plan assignments, design assessments in order to measure the success of the training provided, evaluate progress, provide course materials, and answer ad hoc questions in the areas of Coding for Provider Based Office settings and/or Hospital Based Office settings. The Trainer I will demonstrate a high level of proficiency in outpatient coding to include Specialty office procedures, Evaluation and Management, Ancillary Coding, Wound Care, Infusions and Obstetrics. The Trainer I will be responsible for accurately explaining coding procedures, demonstrate how to analyze records for accuracy and completeness, train on how to perform coding activities and how to address common errors and issues in an effort to enhance the knowledge and skills of the organizations employees. The Trainer I will participate in the creation and implementation of training programs, audit based training, onboarding training and any ad hoc training requests. The Trainer I abides by the standards and ethics set forth by the American Health Information Management Association, American Medical Association, National Correct Coding Initiative and Internal Coding Guidelines. They will align training with the organization’s goals.
  • Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
    • Education: A bachelors’ degree in Healthcare Administration, HIM or a related business field is preferred.
    • License/Certification: Possess one or more of the following certifications: CPC, COC, CPMA, CHC, CPCO, CCS-P, CCS, RHIA, RHIT or CIC.
    • Experience: 3 or more years’ progressive healthcare and/or outpatient based coding experience required. Prior coding training or supervisory experience preferred.  Experience in Epic is preferred.
    • Must have in-depth knowledge of hospital, professional, medical and behavioral practice organizational structure. CAH, RHC, and FQHC experience is helpful.
    • Must possess the analytical ability and public speaking skills in order to share knowledge in an effective way that enhances learning and the application of new skills.
    • Must have excellent time management skills in order to meet expectations and deadlines as assigned.
    • Ability to analyze and interpret clinical and administrative healthcare data and communicate at a college level, in both verbal and written formats.
    • Knowledge of physician and/or hospital billing practices, CMS regulations, CPT coding guidelines from the American Medical Association, as well as knowledge of the AHA Coding Clinic, commercial payer guidelines, state and federal healthcare regulatory guidance and the ability to research and analyze this in order to build out materials for the staff.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective and ethical working relationships coders, administrators, supervisors, subordinates, outside agency personnel, and all levels of hospital personnel.
    • Must be able to communicate effectively in a variety of settings with MaineHealth staff through documents, reports, discussion and electronic methods.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office is required. Epic, or other healthcare EHR experience is preferred.
    • Demonstration of integrity, maturity, dependability, stamina, positive attitude and enthusiasm in the performance of responsibilities.
    • Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills.
