Job/Internship Description
Job Description

The Executive Office of the President's Office of National Drug Control Policy (EOP/ONDCP) leads interagency and intergovernmental policy development and analysis work focused on two distinct but interconnected mission spheres: public health interventions aimed at reducing illicit substance use or misuse of prescription drugs, treating substance use disorder, and developing and enhancing resources for those in recovery from substance use; and interdiction initiatives aimed at reducing the trafficking and overall availability of illicit substances and their chemical precursors.

ONDCP's Office of Translational Research (OTR) is the main coordinating body for ensuring that policy-making is based on the latest research, data, and evidence. OTR works closely with the Office of Public Health and the Office of International Relations and Supply Reduction in order to inform their approaches to policy-making; and with the Interagency Performance Division to evaluate progress on drug policy. OTR also leads interagency efforts to improve real-time data collection and strategic research efforts; and plays a key fact-checking role for the agency, as needed.

ONDCP/OTR seeks 2 part-time interns who are highly motivated to contribute to ONDCP's critical mission:

1. The first internship will focus on intensive data visualization projects. This includes the development of slides, tables, infographics, and other verbal and nonverbal media to convey substance use data in a comprehensive and comprehensible format. Especially relevant are data visualization materials related to the tracking of nonfatal overdose information in the US, as well as emerging threats data. For the first position, candidates should possess a strong background in data visualization skills. This may include software expertise in packages such as Tableau, Powerpoint, and graphical elements in Excel. An ideal candidate would also possess relevant training in statistical analysis and data visualization (at least at the advanced undergraduate level).

2. The second internship will focus on developing approaches to rapid ethnographic assessments in substance use to augment quantitative data collection. Ideally, this work would result in the development of a Mixed Methods approach to understanding the impact of substance use at the community level, with a special focus on using lessons learned to build health equity. For the second position, candidates should possess a strong background at the advanced undergraduate or graduate level in ethnographic approaches, data collection and analysis. Further, demonstrated experience working on Mixed Methods projects is highly desirable.

The Fall 2022 internship term begins on Monday, September 12, 2022, and ends on Friday, December 16, 2022. Interns will receive stipend payments of $375/week for part-time interns and $750/week for full-time interns. Part-time is considered a minimum of 15 hours/week to 34 hours/week; full-time is considered 35 - 40 hours/week. Stipend payments will be calculated based on the hourly rate (part-time or full-time) multiplied by the total weeks in the session (14). Two thirds of the overall stipend amount will be paid on or about the beginning of the internship; the remaining one third will be paid upon successful completion of the internship. In the event an internship ends early for any reason, the intern may be required to reimburse the government for any stipend amounts or portion thereof paid to the intern. All internships are located in Washington, D.C. All intern schedules are Monday - Friday and interns may only work between the hours of 7am - 7pm ET.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
* Must be a U.S. citizen;
* Must be 18 years of age or older;
* Males must be registered with the Selective Service;
* Must be able to commit to at least 15 hours per week;
* Must be currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate college, community college, or university at least half-time;
* Must pass a background check and drug test;

* You may not receive compensation for this internship from any other source apart from the Executive Office of the President's stipend.

Applications will be accepted from Friday, June 24, 2022, through Friday, July 8, 2022. However, applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, so applicants are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible during the application window.

This internship will be conducted onsite/in-person; however, telework options may be available to selected candidates, contingent on supervisor approval and in accordance with the ONDCP Telework Policy. Telework is not guaranteed for any internship position.
